June 18, 2012 - PRLog -- The Chairman of one of Scotland's leading recycling social enterprises has been knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

The Rt Hon Geore Reid, chairman of Alloa Community Enterprises (ACE) and a former presiding officer in the Scottish Parliament is to be rewarded for a life of public service.

The former journalist turned politician took over the Chair at ACE in 2010, following in the wake of founder Dr Alf Martin who chaired the charity for 26 years between 1984 and 2012.

The charity runs a profitable waste management business, ACE Recycling Group (ARG), which provides a professional service to businesses, local authorities, and communities across Clackmannanshire, Stirling, Falkirk, Lanarkshire, West Lothian, Glasgow, and Edinburgh as well  as other areas of Scotland through a network of strategic partners. ARG is a community interest company that provides training and employment, improves employability, increases environmental awareness and returns profits to support the social needs of communities in which it operates.

ACE Managing Director, Malcolm McArdle said: "Dr Martin was a remarkable character and we knew when it came to finding his successor it would have to be someone very special. We were delighted and honoured when George agreed to take on the role.

“George has been a great stabilising influence for ACE in very difficult economic times. His experience and dedication to service is inspirational to us all and he has overseen significant improvements in our corporate governance and our strategic thinking."

Mr Reid, who recently turned 73, described the award as an honour and said it was a nice rounding of a life spent trying to make a difference and helping others.

“It's nice to feel that other people feel that you have made a difference in public life,” he said.
