How do you find the best Mexican food in San Diego with so many Mexican restaurants available. Start with those that have a long history of providing excellent food and you can't go wrong. El Indio is just such a restaurant with a rich history.

June 16, 2012 - PRLog -- When looking for the Best Mexican Food in San Diego, why not start with one of the oldest and best established Mexican restaurants in San Diego?

El Indio was founded in 1940 at the corner of India and Grape as a Tortilla Factory, by Ralph Pesqueira Sr. At the time fresh tortillas were made by hand, but there were no food dishes per se. After a while customers from the various nearby factories began asking for ready to eat lunch items. Responding to what the customers wanted, Ralph Sr. coined the word, “Taquito” meaning “Little Taco” and began selling ready to eat lunch items, as requested.

Between 1945 and 1946 Ralph Sr. made his first tortilla machine in the basement so that he could increase production. At the time he could only make about 30 dozen tortillas a day, but the machine allowed him to increase production to 30 dozen tortillas per hour, while maintaining the same quality. He was then able to begin selling his tortillas to the local restaurants.

In 1947 Ralph Sr. moved the restaurant to its current location at 3695 India St. It was a small restaurant, but allowed him to provide many of the same Mexican recipes that they continue to sell today. The Sonora style Mexican dishes were perfected by the parents and grandparents of Ralph Jr., who now runs the business. Ralph Jr. is preparing his daughters to take over the helm and continue in the same family tradition that was established by Ralph Sr. in 1940.

El Indio is not only known locally for providing the best Mexican food in San Diego, but is also known worldwide for providing care packages to soldiers who were fighting in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Afghanistan. When politicians in Congress request an “El Indio Care Package” to be sent to them from San Diego, you know you are providing good food.

So what makes El Indio so special? The answer begins with the way the food is made. Everything is made from scratch. If you visit El Indio, you will observe our machine making fresh tortillas today. All ingredients are fresh so that you get the best of the best when it comes to quality Mexican food.

El Indio has become well known for their catering of large parties whether on our Garden Patio itself or providing catering at a location of your choice. In fact, they had the privilege of catering the first inauguration of The Honorable Pete Wilson for Governor. When it comes to Mexican food catering in San Diego, El Indio is right at the top of the pack.

About the only thing that has changed with El Indio is the size of the restaurant. As the business has grown, the restaurant has grown to keep up. The food however has not changed. They have continued with the same high quality standards that gave them the reputation of the best Mexican food in San Diego.
