PRLog (Press Release) - Jun. 14, 2012 - Starting in the last row of a 22 car field, Gary Mitidiero of Homer Glen, Illinois came from behind to win the Vintage Stock Car Feature driving the RE/MAX Synergy Camaro at the famous Milwaukee Mile.  “This is really a thrill to win at this race track” said Mitidiero in Victory Circle.  “When I was a kid we’d come up here to watch some of the greatest drivers in the history of auto racing compete.  To be able to stand in the same A.J. Foyt Victory Circle as they did is as good as it gets.”

The roster of past winners at America's Legendary Oval is a veritable "who's-who" of racing history, including names like Barney Oldfield, Rex Mays, Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt, the Unsers, the Andrettis and Dale Earnhardt Jr.  Now, that list includes Gary Mitidiero.

When the American Speed Association (ASA) began planning the Howie Lettow Memorial Race they knew that alongside of the main event they had to do something significant to recognize the historic nature of the Milwaukee Mile where the race was to be held.  Since 1903, The Milwaukee Mile has been one of the premier venues in American motorsports. It is the oldest operating motor speedway in the world, as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway began contesting events in 1911.  “Inviting the Vintage Stock Car group to be part of this just seemed like the right thing to do” said an ASA official.

The Vintage Stock Car group is a diverse collection of race cars encompassing cars from the 50’s through the mid 2000’s with everything from short track stock cars to some retired NASCAR Cup cars.  In keeping with the “old style” format of short track stock car racing, the faster cars always start at the back giving everyone an opportunity to win and providing excitement for their fans.

Mitidiero struggled in the early laps, bottled up in traffic.  When the #43 Richard Petty Car lost an engine, the caution came out tightening up the field even more.  Running seventh, with only eight laps to go, he knew he had to make every move count.  In the closing laps, he passed Dan Navrestad’s Daryl Waltrip car to take the lead, only to lose that lead a lap later.  He once again pressed on, passing Dan to never give up the lead again.

After the race Mitidiero praised his competition saying, “This is a tough group and it’s an honor to be able to race with them.  They race hard, but clean.”  He also thanked his sponsor “The RE/MAX Synergy Team has been behind me for three years now and it’s great to have them here to share in this victory.”

The RE/MAX Synergy Vintage Camaro is frequently seen at many festivals and events in the Chicago area and can next be seen at the Homer Glen Independence Day Parade where Gary Mitidiero will be signing autographs.
