Athletes Inspiring Athletes: Annual leadership conference presenters showcase the impact that participating in sports had on their lives, education and careers

NEWTON, Mass., June 14, 2012 – Working just as hard in the classroom as you do on the field, court, track or in the pool is a recipe for success, according to the all-star roster of speakers at this year’s 2nd Annual Dream Big! Leadership Conference.

Presented last week by Dream Big! and hosted at Conte Forum by Boston College Department of Athletics, more than 135 girls from a dozen schools in Greater Boston and Lawrence joined 20 of their teachers and coaches to hear directly from former Olympic, professional, collegiate and high school female athletes about how sports – and the friends and mentors they met through sports – paved the way for tremendous personal and professional success later in life.

Emphasizing the equally crucial off-the-field benefits, the Dream Big! Leadership Conference provided opportunities for middle school and high school girls to meet and interact with accomplished women on a college campus while learning about the wide range of educational and career opportunities available to them in today’s society. Girls heard first-hand the stories of women who participated in sports, faced many of life’s challenges and came out on top thanks to the lessons they learned through their athletic endeavors. Importantly, the presenters emphasized the critical role that working hard in school, making healthy lifestyle choices and believing that you can accomplish anything plays in enabling the students’ own dreams to come true.

Conference speakers included:

Angela Hucles: Dream Big! Board President; two-time Olympic gold medalist and former professional soccer player; entrepreneur and motivational speaker

Linda Driscoll: Dream Big! Founder & CEO; former high school field hockey, basketball and softball athlete

Bridget Belgiovine: Director of Athletics/Chair, Physical Education and Recreation, Wellesley College; former collegiate lacrosse athlete and field hockey and basketball coach

Marsha Florio: Senior Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of Athletics, Recreation and Programs, University of Massachusetts/Boston; former collegiate field hockey and lacrosse athlete

Brianna Forde: Program Associate - The Boston Foundation-CHAMPS Boston; former collegiate basketball athlete and coach

Dr. Megan Leo: Attending Physician - Emergency Medicine, Boston Medical Center; former collegiate soccer athlete

Dottie Lessard: President and CEO, Live Life Fully, LLC; author, Seven Letters that Saved My Life; U.S. Transplant Games multiple gold medalist in track and field

Monique Maye: Sports Agent, Maye & Associates and Assistant Professor, Columbia College; former collegiate basketball and softball athlete and basketball coach

Dr. Lauren Smith, M.P.H.: Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer, Massachusetts Department of Public Health; former high school swimmer, volleyball and track athlete

Tara Spann: Former Executive Director of Diversity Initiatives, Staples; former high school basketball athlete and coach

Sarah Keohane Williamson: Partner, Wellington Management; former collegiate rugby athlete

“Participation in sports gives girls the strength, self-esteem and tools they need to succeed in life,” Driscoll said. “In team sports, you learn to win and lose and work together with others toward a common goal – skills that are so important in any workplace and in life. It was so inspiring to watch the girls throughout the day as they admired and learned from these amazing mentors and female athletes. Our speakers shared their life stories, showed them that they could do and be anything they wanted despite the challenges life may have handed them, encouraged them that they should always dream big, stressed the importance of education and emphasized how participation in sports would play an important role in each girl’s life journey.”

Students and teachers/program leaders attending the conference represented Beantown Jumpers; Beyond Soccer; Codman Academy; Boston Centers for Youth & Families - G.I.R.L.S. Initiative; Doc Wayne Athletic League; Edison K-8; Germain Lawrence; Higginson-Lewis K-8; John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science; Mildred Avenue School; Quincy Catholic Academy; and Timilty Middle School.

Another conference highlight was the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) student athlete workshop entitled, “Becoming a Triple-Impact Competitor,” presented by The Boston Foundation – CHAMPS Boston Program Associate Brianna Forde. Anyone who plays on a team is a participant. However, it requires hard work, commitment and personal growth to become what PCA calls a “Triple-Impact Competitor.” This interactive workshop defined what it means to be a Triple-Impact Competitor, in terms of how an athlete can improve: THEMSELVES (through the ELM Tree of Mastery), THEIR TEAMMATES (by Filling Emotional Tanks) and THE GAME (through Honoring the Game).
