Matt Faulkner introduced the Awards via a pre-recorded video, commenting, “Every day I hear about the challenges businesses face, but there are so many great companies that are thriving in Somerset and these awards are the ideal opportunity to recognise them. Early indications show that 2012 will be an exceptional year showcasing the county’s finest companies and I cannot wait to find out more about them!”
The annual awards, now in its seventh year, recognise business success, adding credibility and achieving publicity for the winners. One of the most important and popular fixtures on the county’s business calendar, many Somerset Business Award winners go on to do bigger and better things following the success of winning an award.
Winner of the 2011 Business of the Year Award, in the 5-50 employees category, was Bridgwater based HippyChick. Jeremy Minchin, joint founder of the business, says, “Entering the Somerset Business Awards was a really good stimulant for HippyChick. We had to analyse the business critically, which makes you truly appreciate the strengths of the company and recognise weaknesses. Simply by completing the application, we improved as a business, we are now more effective, more efficient and more profitable. It was a brilliant motivator for the whole company – we asked all our employees what they thought we did well and what we weren’t so good at. Our employees then helped make significant improvements to the business, which made them feel valued, this is hugely important for us as our staff are the driving force of the business.”
David Griffin, Managing Partner of Albert Goodman LLP, the main sponsor of the Somerset Business Awards, says, “It’s a delight and an honour for Albert Goodman to sponsor such an important event in the Somerset business calendar. This is a great opportunity to encourage firms that are growing, that have something special to offer and those that have great expertise, to highlight their success and move forward. As a long established firm, Albert Goodman enjoys finding and supporting innovative and entrepreneurial businesses and celebrating their successes with them.”
The Somerset Business Awards are open to Somerset companies of all types and sizes. Businesses can nominate themselves and are welcome to enter more than one category, but should make multiple applications online, ensuring they differentiate between the criteria of each award. For entry details and to apply online, please visit www.somersetbusinessawards.org.uk. The closing date for award applications is 5.00 pm on 31 August.
All shortlisted companies will be invited to the glittering black tie dinner and prestigious Awards ceremony, which will be held on 16 November at the Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton.
