When it comes to sending confidential documents or data over the internet usually the first question you have to ask yourself is: "Which of these websites am I going to trust with my secret data?". Which can be a hard decision to make before you hand over your most sensitive information to a company you've never done any business with before.
The new service follows a new emerging design paradigm known as host-proof hosting. The goal of a host-proof application is to remove the requirement of trust from the server side of the service. Everything that needs to be trusted gets moved to the client side where it is open, transparent and auditable.
All encryption is done in the users web browser so the server never handles unencrypted data. Also the javascript code we send to the user is sent as a single file before they log in, and we never send them any more after that point. So the user, if they so wish, can verify that the code is genuine, that it doesn't do anything malicious and they can know that its impossible for us to send them additional code.
Up until now picking a provider has been a question of which "secure" provider you decide to trust. With more and more sensitive data it becomes harder to justify handing your files over to an unknown, untrusted third party, especially when you have no way of verifying what they say is true. With SendItOnTheNet the code is open and transparent. Our technology is out in the open, not hidden away in a server that you have no access to and cannot check. It is not enough that encryption happens in the browser, but key generation must also happen in the browser too.
SendItOnTheNet is launching as a free service to promote the use of host-proof design.
