PRLog - Jun. 13, 2012 - More than 65 employees of Property Masters, a Marietta-based property-improvement company, spent last Friday mowing, weeding, planting, cleaning and creating appealing outdoor spaces, just as they do every other workday. This time, however, the Property Masters professionals weren’t just doing their jobs—they were volunteering their time in the effort to make more affordable housing available to lower-income families.

“We had an overwhelming response from our staff to participate in this worthy cause,” said Property Masters’ CEO Kyle Cooper of the day-long project involving three homes in the Decatur area. “We wanted to help—not just the families who will move into these homes, but the communities that will be positively impacted by the improvements and sense of neighborhood renewal,” he said.

Property Masters donated the materials, and Property Masters’ staff members provided their professional skills to upgrade the yards and surroundings of the three homes. The company partnered with the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, Inc. (ANDP) and NeighborWorks® America to help ready the homes for working families to purchase at a reasonable cost. These organizations, and the companies like Property Masters that support them, meet a vital and growing need to address the diminishing supply of affordable housing in the metro Atlanta region as well as to reclaim declining neighborhoods in its core.

Since its inception in 1991, ANDP has supported the creation of 8,000 units of housing for people with low to moderate levels of income. ANDP is an affiliate of the NeighborWorks America network of 235 independent, community-based non-profit organizations nationwide. The two organizations work closely together to provide the policy, lending and development programs needed to create mixed-income housing opportunities near job centers in Atlanta.

“We are pleased that Property Masters has joined us in our development activity, one that has become even more important since the foreclosure crisis,” said John O’Callahan, president and CEO of ANDP. “Since 2008 we’ve been focused on acquisition and rehab of single-family homes impacted by foreclosure, and the families who’ve struggled during the recession. Now more than ever is the time to redouble our efforts to help overcome the impact of difficult economic times.”

Donald Phoenix, director for NeighborWorks America’s Southern district office in Atlanta, concurs: “The mission of NeighborWorks America is to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities—a mission that has been significantly challenged by the recent housing crisis,” he said. “In our organization’s history it has never been more critical for local organizations like ANDP to connect with supporters such as Property Masters to help families and neighborhoods.”
