How to Get Rid of Bacterial Vaginosis

Find out how one can get rid of bacterial vaginosis infection quickly.

June 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Bacterial vaginosis occurs when bad bacterium develop in high numbers in the vaginal causing an imbalance in the vagina flora that can lead to medical issues such as infections, diseases, etc. Because of these risks it is important to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV) properly as soon as it is diagnosed. There are many treatments for BV including prescribed medication, over the counter medications such as vaginal suppositories or topical creams and natural remedies.

Prescription Treatments

Metronidazole (also known as Flagyl) – This is an oral medication that has a high cure rate and is relatively inexpensive in the generic form. It however leaves a very metallic taste in the mouth for sometime after swallowing and those who partake in alcohol within three days of taking the medication will be very sorry because it is very likely they will be severely nauseas for sometime (even cough syrup).

Clindamycin – This is also an oral tablet with a high cure rate, though slightly less than Metronidazole. This is a good alternative for women who are unable to take Metronidazole (Flagyl) and does not cause nausea when mixed with alcohol. The down side is that it may cause an overabundance of streptococcus bacterium and has some serious warnings such as infrequent, but severe to fatal intestinal problems. Because of these warnings, the medication is reserved for the most severe cases of bacterial vaginosis.

Over the Counter Treatments

Femanol - The probiotic suppository corrects and counters the imbalance of the vaginal flora by eliminating the “bad” bacteria. It is comprised of several ingredients such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, garlic and zinc which is known to help to kill bacteria and bolster the “good” bacterium known as lactobacilli that keeps the vagina healthy and in balance.

Natural Remedy Treatments

Goldenseal – The herb works as a natural immune system enhancer and works from within to eradicate the overgrowth of bacterium in the vagina. It is natural so it can be used multiple times without any risks or warnings for women who suffer from BV often.

Probiotic Foods - Certain foods can help to fight the “bad” bacteria in the vagina by improving the balance of the “good” bacteria. Probiotic foods like yogurt, blue cheese, pickles, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir and other fermented foods will aid in boosting the immune system and balancing the bacteria in the body such as the vagina.
