June 13, 2012 - PRLog -- It can surely only be a matter of time before the hit television show The Only Way is Essex brings us a ratings-busting on-screen wedding.
Towie, as the reality show is known, features real Essex people in modified situations, saying unscripted lines but in a structured way. The show is filmed just a few days in advance and is narrated by actress Denise van Outen, who is from Basildon in Essex.
Its larger-than-life bronzed and beautiful characters have a reputation for saying it straight in their broad Essex accents. They seem to want to shock as they lurch from one relationship crisis to another.
Millions of people have tuned into the award-winning show since it began in 2010 and a fair percentage of the viewers are hoping true love will come through for at least one of the couples and we will see a big, bright Essex wedding.
When that happens every detail of the ceremony and the inevitably over-the-top party will be copied. Dresses will be cloned, wedding reception venues in Essex will be booked out and the tanning studios and hairdressing salons will go into over-drive.
The chances are the show’s ratings will go through the roof and after the nuptials there will be speculation about the honeymoon destination. All this will swiftly followed by the inevitable storyline, is she pregnant? It will be television’s version of a Royal Wedding!
When Towie was first broadcast the tabloids panned it but now the cast are media stars and minor celebrities, in demand to present television shows of their own, open nightclubs and make guest appearances.
Spin-off series have included a one-hour special featuring the cast in Marbella; The Only Way Is Marbs. Every moment of the run-up to the show was closely followed by tabloid journalists scrutinising the exercise regimes and partying of the stars as they mingled with the beautiful people of the Costa del Sol with its reputation as a playground for its super-rich and famous.
Towie-style tight, short and revealing dresses are the order of the day for many young women who search the internet to recreate the celebrity style.
It seems modern British culture not only includes watching reality television shows such as Towie and its “up market” rival Made in Chelsea, but also copying every aspect of the style. Even the shade of the fake tans sported by the stars of the shows are compared, analysed and copied by tanning salons across the country.
The young men who feature in The Only Way is Essex also have cult status. They spend equal amounts of time as their female counterparts preening, prettying and bronzing themselves for the cameras and then strutting their stuff at celebrity events for the rest of the week.
All this attention to trivial designer detail means that when it happens the first Towie wedding is bound to be a mahogany-coloured confection of low-cut tulle, coiffed blonde locks and crystal-encrusted partying. Perhaps that’s just what austerity Britain needs!
