Zero leakage a reality with refrigerant gas detection training and support

UK and Irish businesses are increasingly concerned with achieving zero refrigerant leakage rates. Refrigeration gas detection and leakage detection systems can help to achieve this - however expert training, guidance and support is required.

June 12, 2012 - PRLog -- For any business in the UK and Ireland that utilises refrigeration, the threat of a refrigerant leak is a real worry. Having a reliable refrigerant gas detection system in place is therefore vital to their operations. But an efficient leak detection system is only as reliable as the personnel charged with operating it.

Careless installation, poor maintenance and ignorance of repair procedures can make a refrigerant leak detector redundant to the task for which it was created. To achieve its potential, a refrigerant leak detector needs to be operated correctly. For operators, this means training, support and guidance from UK organisations trusted with the task of helping businesses achieve zero refrigerant leakage.

About the REAL Zero Inititiative for Refrigerant Gas Detection

REAL Zero is a new UK initiative developed by the Institute of Refrigeration and funded by the Carbon Trust, designed to help industries to work towards this zero refrigerant leakage rate. The programme aims to help businesses develop a clearer understanding of where and why leakages occur and how to prevent them by offering the skills, training and technologies to achieve this.

The REAL Zero project has developed a range of guidelines for the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigerant leak detection units, education on carbon emissions, and access to refrigerant gas detection management tools. These resources are available to all sectors and industries. The project offers a European-wide multilingual e-learning and assessment scheme and provides the opportunity for accreditation for refrigerant leak detector specialists.

How is the REAL Zero initiative reducing leakage rates?

According to their records, the REAL Zero initiative has helped businesses in the UK achieve leakage reduction of up to 25%. This is achieved by offering businesses more effective refrigerant gas detection management training.

In addition to teaching the basic skills to install, repair and maintain a refigerant leak detector system, the training also provides the opportunity for refrigerant gas detection system operators to work with specialists to implement effective refrigerant management and leakage reduction strategies. Their studies show that so far this system has helped UK businesses reduce leakage by on average 44% over an 18 month period.

The Real Zero initiative is a practical and educative way for UK and Irish businesses to learn how to better implement refrigerant gas detection and leakage prevention systems. Zero refrigerant leakage is not just the ideal way of doing things. Across the UK and Ireland, a zero leakage rate should be the norm - an everyday achievable target.

Zero leakage can easily be achieved and maintained by ensuring the following three steps are taken:

• The correct implementation of expertly designed refrigerant leak detector units,
• Ongoing training and support in the efficient usage of these leak detection tools,
• Continued access to guidance and expertise from industry bodies like the REAL Zero initiative in order to ensure best practices are adhered to.

By ensuring your cold storage facilities have reliable refrigerant leak detector systems in place you can help your business achieve - and maintain - this zero refrigerant leakage target.
