Thousands Dream Of Moving Abroad Despite Recession

Tourism in the UK is having a bumper year what with the Jubilee and Olympics. But for many, it will be the year they leave the UK as they emigrate to pastures new. This article looks at what makes some people pack up and leave their homes forever.

June 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Every year thousands of Brits fall in love with their holiday destination and want to make it home.

Forget the recession; it seems a huge number of us can find the money to relocate to sunnier climes. A survey in 2010 found that two million Britons live abroad for most of the year.

Of these, an estimated 1.2 million British expats were retired or semi-retired, of which 400,000 were in Spain, and 200,000 in France. The remaining 350,000 were either on holiday, second home owners or investors who live abroad.

Opinions vary on why so many people want to move away either permanently or for large parts of the year.

The weather is a factor for some of those who leave Britain and it may be because they crave sunshine or simply that heating costs are lower. The general cost of living and the quality of life are often cited too.

Not all of us can afford to up sticks and set up home in Spain, Italy, France or Australia, of course. Nevertheless, millions of us love to dream about the prospect and television programmes, magazines and exhibitions extolling the virtues of living abroad are hugely popular.

The Channel 4 show A Place In The Sun not only has its own magazine but also holds an exhibition twice a year. It attracts thousands of people interested in overseas property.

The next event, at the NEC Birmingham between September 28 and 30, will feature properties for sale in 40 countries and well as stands covering every aspect of moving abroad.

Deciding on the ideal home abroad is a major decision, particularly in the current climate and the experts agree research is the key. The last thing you want to do is splash out on your dream home to discover the vagaries of the local tax system make it more of a nightmare.

The show will feature experts offering advice on everything from investment opportunities to tax and healthcare to healthcare legal issues so you will be fully briefed before you take the plunge.

The centre piece of the show will be the Main Stage where Channel 4 TV presenters Amanda Lamb, Jasmine Harman and Jonnie Irwin will be appearing over the weekend to give their top tips on buying property overseas.

It is worth finding a hotel in Birmingham to stay over for the exhibition. The Birmingham NEC hotels all have good communications links to the exhibition centre and there is plenty to do in the city each evening.

The city’s night life is famous and if that’s not your thing you will find plenty of shops. Top of many people’s list of things to do in Birmingham is to visit The “Balti Triangle”, the world class restaurants which are a delicious part of the city’s culture.

Birmingham claims to be the curry capital of the nation and the birthplace of the balti, a Pakistani dish introduced to the city by its large Kashmiri population. In addition to The Balti Triangle – the areas of Sparkhill, Balsall Heath and Moseley in South Birmingham – there are plenty of award-winning Asian and Indian restaurants if you like your food spicy. This area is a huge pull for people from all over the country who visit to sample the exceptional cuisine. Each restaurant offers its own take on the dish and the authentic recipes – closely guarded secrets – are what makes eating in The Balti Triangle a memorable experience.

Once you have had a taste of the good life at the exhibition a visit to one of these restaurants might be a delicious way to complete your trip to Birmingham.
