(Carlsbad, CA) Seniors from Lauren Monahan’s AP English Literature class at La Costa Canyon High School in San Diego, California have created an ebook featuring their college essays and tips from their experience going through the college admissions process. Titled, 500 Words or Less: A Collection of College Essays, the eBook is now offered internationally via iBooks for iPad and on smashwords.com for download on iBooks, Kindle, Nook and others for free. Updates, images, and publishing information are available on http://500wordsorless.weebly.com/
The students decided to make this ebook available to everyone to ensure opportunities for anybody applying to college. The authors went through the arduous process of applying to college last fall and in response created a book that contained what they wished they’d had. When asked how she would use this resource, LCC senior Olivia Cornwell, said, ”I definitely would have used it to spark my creativity when thinking about what to write. It would have been helpful to see where others were accepted, and understand the level of writing I am competing with.” Not only will readers be able to see the essays students wrote, but will also be able to see where each student was admitted and will be attending college.
Teacher Lauren Monahan stated “The world of publishing is changing quickly, and I love that my students want to have a part in the evolution. I think that we’ll see far more students teaching students in the future, and the thought of my students helping others on a national -- or even global -- level to achieve their dreams is pretty remarkable. I’m proud of them.”
