Governor’s Council Encourages Community Participation at Local Mentoring and Sporting Event

Grass root organizations come together to save the youth in Metro Detroit
 
June 11, 2012 - PRLog -- Detroit, MI – The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness has recognized Detroit – Sporting a New Attitude Forum as a quality physical activity event.

The Detroit - Sporting a New Attitude Forum will serve over 400 at-risk youth and their families. This impactful event is scheduled for 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on June 30, 2012 at Northwestern High School in Detroit. The all-star celebrity line-up includes; Ben Gordon, Jason Richardson, and Bobby Smith, along with other well known veteran athletes. The activities will include the Jason Richardson Man-Up and Speak to the Brim Forums; basketball, football, baseball and fencing clinics, along with an aftercare center to provide families with a plethora of resources for long term assistance extending past the one day event.  Registration is available online www.detroitersunited.com or  www.jrf23.org/event.php?id=2.

   The Governor’s Council endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents. Detroit - Sporting a New Attitude Community Outreach Youth Empowerment Day and Forum exemplifies this core value and is endorsed by the Governor’s Council.

   “By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state’s economy.”  

   “The youth in the City of Detroit need us. They need to know that we care, we hear their cry and we are here to support them however we can.” Gail Perry-Mason the group’s organizer explained.  Perry-Mason a respected authority in the financial industry is also a well-known advocate for children as she volunteers much of her time teaching youth the importance of money management. She founded and directed the original Money Camp for Teens and the first youth investment club.  Each year Gail hosts a Money Camp for Youth, which has instructed over 6,000 young people in the Detroit-Metro area and mentored over 25 young women who are now professionals in the financial industry.  Currently she is conducting a program in the Detroit Public Schools that teaches financial literacy and outlines the steps to entrepreneurship.

   In order to become an endorsed event, an organization must complete an application form for review. Some criteria that is taken into consideration includes providing a positive, safe physical activity experience using qualified officials and benefiting a nonprofit or charitable organization.
