June 11, 2012 - PRLog -- CINCINNATI, OH  - (June 11, 2012) This Sunday, dads will be celebrated nationwide for Father's Day. Rightfully so, says Cincinnati-based relationship expert Shari Goldsmith, especially when it comes to their important role in father-daughter relationships.

"Studies show that dad give daughters 90% of their self-esteem before the age of 12," she explains. "Fathers also tend to exert a calming influence on girls because they are able to stand outside the storm of the mother/daughter relationship."

Goldsmith says the father-daughter relationship is vital to their development as a child, teen and as an adult. She offers the following five tips for dads to keep in mind as they celebrate another year of their special role this Sunday:

1) Daughters of fathers who insist on boundaries, and rules concerning safety issues, feel more loved and valued.
2) The father has direct influence on what kind of person the daughter will become. In fact, fathers may be able to provide daughters with a unique perspective, enhance their overall understanding of men and provide opportunities to role-play communication strategies with men.
3) According to research, fathers who pay attention to their daughter's achievements, interests and character tend to produce more confident adults, whereas fathers who dwell on their daughters appearance tend to damage their self-esteem.
4) 76% of teen girls said that father influenced their decision whether or not to become sexually active, according to the National Household Education Survey. Daughters with caring, involved fathers are less likely to flaunt their bodies to seek male attention.
5) Generally, fathers have more impact than mom in the following areas:
- career success
- dealing with people of authority-especially men
- self-confidence
- trust in relationships
- expressing anger appropriately
- maintaining mental health
