-- ASHEVILLE, NC – Wine and Design Asheville recently hosted a fundraiser for Boston Terrier Rescue of NC (BTRNC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding new adoptive homes for Boston Terriers surrendered by private owners and obtained from shelters, humane societies, and animal welfare organizations. The three-hour painting event attracted 12 participants and raised $135, which will be used to pay the organization’
s veterinary expenses.
was founded in 2004 and primarily serves North Carolina, but is also active in South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. Each Boston Terrier received by BTRNC receives vaccinations, micro-chipping, spaying/neutering, vet visits, and any needed medical treatment. The goals of the organization include rescuing Boston Terriers from abuse/neglect situations, placing rescued dogs in BTRNC-designated foster homes or qualified foster homes, adopting dogs to approved permanent “forever” homes, and maintaining a financial base from which dogs in the BTRNC program are provided rehabilitation services.
To tie in with BTRNC’s mission, the fundraiser featured a “Paint Your Pet” theme. Participants submitted a photo of their pet, which was then transferred onto a 16 x 20 canvas prior to the event. BTRNC Fundraising Coordinator, Laurie Hicks, says that she got the idea of holding a fundraiser at Wine and Design Asheville after a few BTRNC members went to a fundraiser at Wine and Design Cary last year.
“Fundraisers are very important to our organization,”
says Hicks. “Other than through our supporters and adoptions, we do not generate funds any other way. We’re very appreciative to Wine and Design for holding this fundraiser and for helping us bring some extra attention to our organization and rescue efforts.”
Wine and Design opened its doors in Asheville in December 2011 and is owned and managed by Ece Okar. The studio provides the canvas, aprons, paints, paintbrushes, cups, and corkscrew and attendees provide a beverage of his or her choosing. First-
time painters, aspiring artists, or self-proclaimed pro’s browse the studio’s website to find a painting they would like to replicate. The painting sessions start at $35 per person and are led by a local artist that guides participants through a carefully-orchestrated, step-by-step process that promises “memories and a masterpiece”
in two hours. Okar says that she is grateful for everyone who “signed up, sipped up, and came out to support a very worthwhile cause.”
“I’m so excited to be able to help an organization like Boston Terrier Rescue of North Carolina,” says Okar. “BTRNC gives a voice to these wonderful animals and provides each of these special dogs with the love and care they deserve. They are truly a great organizational, and I look forward to lending my support in any way I can to help them further their important cause.”
BTRNC Foster Mom and member, Linda Cantrell, attended the event and said the entire evening exceeded her expectations.
“We loved it! It was so, so much fun,” says Cantrell. “Everybody [at Wine and Design] was very helpful and patient. People who never painted before came away with work they were happy with. We had so much fun, that I hope we can do it again in the fall.”
