June 8, 2012 - PRLog -- I'm delighted to bring you yet another great issue of COMENSAnews, and one that I hope will go a long way in guiding anyone who is looking at Coaching and Mentoring Training. I'd really like to steer you in the direction of Danny Tuckwood's article, entitled: The Next Level of Trainers' Training. This article brings such a fresh perspective to the whole accreditation debate and really captures the spirit of the coaching community. It was like a breath of fresh air and I really agree with everything that he had to say in it.

The calibre of contributions is very high this month, with what I think is a very important contribution from Dr Dumisani Magadlela on the importance of CONTEXT in mentoring. A lot of what he says is mirrored in the article on Mentoring in the Workplace by Brett Anderson-Terry and Roger Maitland, and they also make some additional excellent arguments for mentoring versus training.

The SA Board for People Practices have generously shared some perspectives on Ethics in Learning and Development from a publication: Ethics in the Workplace, which can be purchased in full from the SABPP (see the article for more details). On the subject of Ethics in Coaching and Mentoring, Natalie Vlismas who chairs the COMENSA National Ethics Committee has shared some of her journey and perspective on Ethics in COMENSA, and asks some questions in her article that you may find a little difficult to answer!

Finally, Sue Bakker and John Paisley bravely try and address the questions that all coaches and wannabe coaches are trying to answer: How to choose the right training institution? If you are on a learning journey, or about to embark on one, these two articles are essential reading and long-awaited. I hope that they help you in your decision-making process.

Respecting Contexr in the Training of Coaches & Mentors in SA
By Dr. Dumisani Magadlela
"Guys, we cannot expect these senior guys to be patient with this group of young people when they don't seem to take their mentoring assignments seriously... they are from a different world". This was a statement by a colleague of mine during an initiative that desperately tried to keep experienced (and grey-haired) accountants interested in continuing to mentor a group of young financial management graduates in selected low-capacity municipalities around South Africa in 2009.

SABPP Position Paper Extract: Ethics in Learning & Development
Excerpt from The HR Guide to Ethics, by the SA Board for People Practices.
Training suggests putting 'stuff' into people, when actually we should be developing people from the inside out – so that they achieve their own individual potential. We often use the term 'learning' to describe the development of the individual in an organisation. Within the South African higher educational arena, there is the concept of 'lifelong learning'.

The Next Level of Trainers Training
by Danny Tuckwood ACMC (Co-authored with L. Michael Hall, Ph.D.)
For many of us in NLP, Neuro-Semantics and the wider coaching community who care and want to see coaching succeed in terms of gaining more credibility academically, more effectiveness in the world of business, and more acceptance publicly—we've got a problem and there are challenges facing us.

Using Mentoring to Grow Talent
By Brett Anderson-Terry & Roger Maitland
It's no longer just business as usual. The world of work has changed dramatically. Globalisation and technological advancement have resulted in hyper-competitive global markets and the onset of 'fast capitalism' (Pavlovic & Strojnov, 2011.)

Choosing a Training Provider
By Sue Bakker
What I want and who I want to be will give clarity to where I need to be – this premise was an awareness raising opportunity that I would soon realise to be as rich as the coach development journey itself.

Ethics at COMENSA
by Natalie Vlismas
Since I have been participating in the COMENSA National Ethics Portfolio Committee, there have been many entertaining and sobering moments. As a committee of dedicated coaches, mentors and COMENSA Members, we are testing the boundaries of very grey areas to emerge a form of ethical evaluation that steers clear of 'policing' yet is effective in raising ethical awareness in the businesses of coaching and mentoring.

Choosing a Coach training Institute
by John Paisley
So you have decided you want to become a coach. You want to do it "properly", do a "proper" training and study for a "legitimate" qualification, with a reputable training institution. Good luck! You are facing quite a challenge!

Monthly Morsel: Speaking at Events
By Megan Hudson
Every year, the Chapter Committees sit with the challenge of filling their calendar of events for the forthcoming year. The refrain is always the same: how to get a great mix of good calibre speakers that will appeal to the entire cross-section of COMENSA members with all their different interests and backgrounds.

Coaching moves to Self-Regulate
a joint press release issued by the EMCC and the ICF
In view of the tremendous growth experienced over the past decade in the coaching and mentoring industry, professional bodies have increasingly recognized the need to lay the ground rules, establish markers of good practice, and move to self-regulate.
