The Ruby Awards acknowledge new and rehabbed affordable housing developments and those who have made exceptional contributions to the provision of affordable housing in San Diego County. The City was nominated in the "outstanding government agency" category, along with Escondido and the California Housing Finance Agency. Nominees considered for this award took unusual risk or initiative to support affordable housing and/or community development initiatives in the past year. “For the past five years, the City has focused on revitalizing its downtown and the local economy,” said Lemon Grove City Manager Graham Mitchell. “By working with an innovative developer, securing several grants, and relying on the input from the community, the City has developed a renaissance plan for the City’s downtown core. This project involves new commercial space, housing for working families, and a gathering space adjacent to the trolley station.” In addition, City employee Barbara Kraber, project manager of the Main Street Promenade Project, has been nominated for the John Craven Memorial Award. This award, given in memory of one of San Diego’s most prominent housing development officials, honors a public employee who has taken risks and has gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist affordable housing developers.
