Lakeland, FL Attorney Keith Merritt to Give Free Bankruptcy Lecture on June 11th

June 7, 2012 - PRLog -- Lakeland attorney Keith Merritt will give the second in a series of free consumer law seminars on Monday, June 11th at 6:00 PM.  The lecture is located at the Lakeland Public Library, Main Branch, 100 Lake Morton Drive.

   The seminar, entitled “Bankruptcy Basics & Your Rights as a Debtor,” covers bankruptcy from the initial filing to the final discharge of debts. Mr. Merritt will explain the differences between a Chapter 7 and a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as well as alternatives to bankruptcy.

   Mr. Merritt will also discuss the Federal Debt Collection and Practices Act (FDCPA).  “This law was passed to protect consumers from unscrupulous debt collectors,” says Mr. Merritt.  “Many people in debt don’t know that they are protected from illegal collection acts. We can help level the debtor/creditor playing field.”  Mr. Merritt will also take any questions as time permits.

   Merritt Law Office, P.A., has focused on helping the consumer. Besides bankruptcy law, the firm handles foreclosure defenses, loan modifications and creditor protection through the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

   Mr. Merritt has been practicing law since his admission to the Florida Bar in 1999. He has worked as a commercial litigator for recognized law firms and was a daily presence in the courtroom while working for the Polk County Guardian Ad Litem program.
