According to Rapid City dentist Dr. Ron Loftus, there are certain foods to add to your diet and others to avoid, if you are interested in improving the health of your teeth.
“Sure, as a dentist, I’m worried about substances like coffee and wine which stain the teeth – but I’m more concerned that people aren’t incorporating enough calcium and vitamin D-rich foods into their diets. Calcium is vital in keeping teeth and jawbones healthy and vitamin D helps our body absorb it,” explained Loftus.
Loftus said one of the best ways to receive calcium and Vitamin D is to drink milk. Milk comes in a variety of forms these days, including almond milk, rice milk and soy milk – which are all fortified with the same amount of calcium and vitamin D as regular milk.
Another food that is naturally rich in calcium is broccoli. It also contains vitamin C, which has been proven to help prevent gum disease and gingivitis. Wild salmon, which can be grilled or baked, is naturally rich in vitamin D.
Other foods to integrate into your diet which will improve the appearance of your teeth include all colors of bell peppers. Green, orange, yellow and red bell peppers are packed with vitamin C.
“When peppers are raw, they act as nature’s toothbrush by stimulating your teeth, massaging your gums and dislodging debris before bacteria take hold,” said Loftus.
Unsweetened green tea is another nutritional choice which helps remove debris stuck in the teeth. The tea’s antioxidants may also help reduce the risk of periodontal disease.
Loftus Dental recommends avoiding sugary beverages such as soda pop and sports drinks. Starchy foods containing white flour such as bagels and pretzels -- as well as candy and dried fruit -- also get stuck in the teeth and may cause tooth decay.
“If you do indulge in these foods, drink a glass of water or chew a piece of sugarless gum to rid your mouth of debris,” said Loftus.
