Follow on Google News | Lingfield charity enters pedigree pigs in South of England ShowThe working farm at Young Epilepsy’s campus in Lingfield is hoping to win ‘Best in Show’ when they enter their pedigree pigs, Alison and Little Alex, at the South of England Show next week.
By: Young Epilepsy Little Alex and Alison are Oxford Sandy and Black pedigrees – a rare English breed. They are being entered into numerous events throughout the three day show including the ‘boar’ class, the ‘breeding sow’ class and the ‘livestock exhibitor’ award. All prize money raised through the event will go direct to the charity – helping to create better futures for young lives with epilepsy. Young Epilepsy’s St Piers Farm Manager, Andrea Simpkins, said: “This is our first time entering the competition and we are really hopeful that Little Alex and Alison will help us put on a good show. “It would be great for the reputation of our breeding herd and fantastic to know the Judges love our pigs as much as we do. We are a working farm but our pigs are also used to teach students about farm life, commerce and most importantly confidence building.” Pigs are known to be highly intelligent and kind – making them the perfect animal for young people to care for. They get used to human contact from an early age and the students are fully involved with the feeding, grooming, cleaning and movement of the animals. The Oxford Sandy and Black pedigree pigs are bred on Young Epilepsy’s St Piers farm, and are reared for breeding, meat and educational purposes. Epilepsy effects over 112,000 children and young people aged 25 and under, and is the most common neurological condition in the UK.
