Since 2010, Smithfield Packing's plants in Virginia have diverted about 7,000 tons of residuals and by-products from disposal to beneficial reuse as feedstocks in the manufacture of premium compost products. In the past 12 years, the Smithfield family of companies in the Carolinas and Virginia has recycled almost 170,000 tons in partnership with McGill. Accepting the award last month in Roanoke, Va., were Mary Beth Wood, Smithfield Packing North, and Sean Fallon, McGill intake account manager.
