Complementary Therapies Can Complement Drugs

A group of psychiatrists are studying and using complementary therapies with psychiatric drugs. This group held a conference recently in Philadelphia to encourage 'integrative psychiatry'.

June 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Alternative and complementary treatments are now accepted in the western world. American Psychiatric Association (APA) members have started to study the effects of yoga, meditation and herbs to bring an ‘integrative’ medical service to people.
Doctors are now looking at the interaction of herbs and pharmaceutical drugs. The American Psychiatry Association Caucus on Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Medicine (APACAIM) consists of a group of psychiatrists who have an interest in holistic and alternative approaches to mental health. A conference of the Caucus was held in Philadelphia on May 6, 2012.
‘Caucus resources are best reserved for advancing the field of Integrative Medicine within Psychiatry’, wrote Lila Massoumi, the organizer of the conference and a practicing integrative psychiatrist in the latest newsletter.
In 2007, more than 38% of US population used non-conventional or complementary and alternative medical products and services according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. According to the 2008 UK Market Synopsis Complementary Therapy published by Cobweb Information Limited, about six million people use complementary therapies every year in the UK.
‘Integrative psychiatry can bring a revolution in the area of mental health’, says Dr. Pradeep Chadha, a local psychiatrist. He is also a member of APACAIM. He successfully uses his expertise in helping clients reduce psychotropic drugs with nutritional supplements, meditation and imagery.
