Georgia Lloyd and Always Home Homecare support the Relay for Life

June 2, 2012 - PRLog -- An estimated 186,400 new cases of cancer and 75,000 cancer deaths will occur in Canada in 2012. In 2007, cancer surpassed cardiovascular disease (heart and cerebrovascular) as the leading cause of death in Canada. It is estimated that 2 out of every 5 Canadians are expected to develop cancer during their lifetime, and 1 out of 4 Canadians will die from it. For the second year in a row, it is estimated that Nova Scotia will have the highest rates of melanoma among males and females in the country. And cancer primarily affects Canadians aged 50+.
It is sobering statistics like this that compelled Georgia Lloyd and Always Home Homecare Ltd to support this year’s Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Being an at home homecare business which assists people in maintaining their independence by placing a care worker with them in their home to help out, Always Home Homecare is no stranger to the debilitating condition that cancer can cause. So when Georgia was approached by CTV’s Jayson Baxter, a member of the Dream Team, requesting support for his fundraising efforts, it was an easy yes.
In May of 1985, Dr. Gordon Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma Washington, committed to raising money for the American Cancer Society in honour of his patients. For 24 hours, Klatt walked around the track at Baker Stadium, raising 27,000.00 to fight cancer, and the following year Relay for Life was born.
In 2010, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life raised over $54 million dollars through 485 events across the country. Georgia is hoping her contribution will help to surpass this total in 2012.
