Ron Buckhalt, USDA Bio-Preferred Program Manager, said, "We are pleased that Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis has earned the USDA Certified Bio-Based and Bio-Preferred Product Label. Bio-based products provide opportunities to help add value to renewable commodities, and also create jobs in rural communities and generate investment income," Buckhalt said. Because of the USDA’s Bio-Preferred certification, “Consumers may feel secure in the accuracy of the Bio-Based amount and be empowered in making better-informed purchasing decisions,” Buckhalt added.
The USDA notified the Lighthouse in May 2012 that Power Green earned Bio-Based, Bio-Preferred certification because it meets or exceeds prescribed USDA standards for products composed in whole or in significant part of agricultural, forestry or marine materials. Power Green’s Bio-Based content of 62% was verified by independent labs monitored by the USDA. The USDA Bio-Preferred program was created by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 and expanded by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 to help increase the purchase and use of Bio-Based products.

The Lighthouse Power Green product will be sold under the SKILCRAFT® brand, which is recognized by 95 percent of federal government purchasers. Power Green is being distributed through AbilityOne sales channels. AbilityOne is a federal initiative to help people who are blind and disabled find employment through nonprofit agencies that sell products to the U.S. government. AbilityOne is coordinated by the National Industries for the Blind, the National Industries for the Severely Handicapped and National Industries for People with Significant Disabilities.
Also known as LHB Industries, Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis is a non-profit entity that helps adults and children who are visually impaired maintain dignity and independence by offering Employment, Education and Support Services.
The Lighthouse currently employs nearly 70 people who are legally blind at its plants in the cities of Berkeley and Overland in St. Louis County.
