Family in the forest
“People want to get away and have authentic – not sybaritic – experiences, especially with their family. A rule in the Amazon states that the farther away from civilization you go and the longer you stay in the forest, the better chances you will have to observe wildlife,” said Jeff Cremer, spokesperson for Rainforest Expeditions.
This Peruvian company is offering lodge and tour discounts of up to 50 percent for ages 5 to 12 sharing a room with parents and a discount of 20 percent for families sharing a triple room. Both promotions apply to stays in June and July 2012 and January, February and March 2013. There is no charge for children through age 4. Ages 13 and up pay full price.
Other lodge-specific specials including tours are at 10 and 15 percent off. For 7-day/6-night stays from September through December 2012 guests enjoy a 10 percent discount off of lodge/tour rates at Tambopata Research Center: $1,080 per person double and $1,410 single. See: http://www.perunature.com/
From November through March its 7-day/6-night Parrot Lovers Program is also at a special 10 percent off rate. The rainforest of Tambopata has gained a reputation of being a hotspot for parrot and macaw lovers due to its healthy populations. A huge clay lick lies less than a kilometer from Tambopata Research Center. Up to 17 species of parrots have been observed at this clay lick. Rates are $1,750 per person double and $1,990 single. http://www.perunature.com/
Guests enjoy a 4-day/3-night Butterfly Lovers Program at Posada Amazonas with 15 percent off of rates from November through March: $965 per person double; $1,270 single. Tambopata is a butterfly lovers paradise with a world record in number of registered species for one location. In this jungle tour different kinds of bait are used in different habitats to attract a large variety of butterfly species. See: http://www.perunature.com/
Each lodge offers monthly promotions that guests can take advantage of while visiting. Posada Amazonas offers specials on jungle mountain biking, massages, kayak day trips and a second child in a family. Refugio Amazonas offers specials on Bamboo Therapy Massage, yoga, canopy climbing and soft adventure outings. Tambopata Research Center has specials on Rainforest and Intense Jungle massages, nature and parrot lover’s programs and butterfly adventures. Guests should inquire when booking for that month’s special.
In each of the three distinct locations, guests are accommodated in clean and comfortable, minimally appointed, three-sided rooms built of clay, wood and palm fronds. The signature statement is to leave one wall open to the jungle so guests can hear, see and smell the rainforest.
The string of three jungle lodges is accessed from Puerto Maldonado airport arriving from Lima or Cusco on daily commercial flights lasting 45 or 90 minutes respectively. A bus transports guests to the Infierno River Port to board motorized wooden canoes for a 45-minute trip to the first lodge, Posada Amazonas. Refugio Amazonas, the second lodge, is a 3.5-hour boat trip after departing the bus. The third and most remote is Tambopata Research Center, requiring a 4-hour additional upriver boat ride from Refugio Amazonas. Each lodge is only a few minutes on foot from the river bank. Rainforest Expeditions and their three lodges have been verified and certified “a sustainable tourism business” by the Rainforest Alliance http://www.rainforest-
