The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com announced that it has added a team in Orange County, CA to its fast-growing Southern California Division – the Orange County Novastars, owned by Novastar Basketball Inc, under the leadership of Al Smith and Glenn Wilkerson. “The SoCal Division is a very strong one with some of the highest ranked teams in the league playing there,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “Both Al & Glenn have great experience on and off the court and we anticipate another great organization there.”
The Novastars will kick off their Inaugural season in November of 2012 against a very competitive 10 team So-Cal division. They are not the only new kids to the block either. Their Long Beach counter-part (Long Beach Rockets) also kick off their new season in 2012-13 and the Novastars intend on making a statement right from the beginning.
Head Coach and CEO Al Smith added, “My desire to pursue ownership of an ABA team and market dates back to 2006 when I first learned the ABA was rebuilding its visibility in the professional basketball arena,” added Al Smith. “I was a fan of the league as a child and watched the likes of Julius Erving work magic with the red, white and blue basketball. It is my desire to bring that type of excitement to the Orange County market".
