May 30, 2012 - PRLog -- It was a very proud moment for the trust as it was the result of five years of planning and hard work finally all coming together to bring together the Treloar’s school and college together on one site.
The Countess of Wessex is the royal patron of Treloar’s and the trust was extremely pleased that she accepted their offer to come and open the new site.
The event itself was attended by more than 100 guests including donors, patrons, governors, trustees, local dignitaries and former staff members.
In honour of the occasion Wessex House was decorated with paper flowers and butterflies that had been made by the students. The countess was then shown around the house by care manager Marilyn Walker and was told by student Ben Dearsley how the kitchen equipment had been adapted for people with disabilities and how the room is a great asset in building up the independence of the students.
The countess was also shown how the bathroom facilities work as well as the mobility equipment that is used in the bedrooms.
The tour then moved on to the schools new teaching block where she was shown around different classes such the music class and a maths group. The countess talked to the students and learned about how they use different equipment to help them with their learning and communication.
The countess was also told about the fundraising that the students have been doing to help and Indian boy Hashish who has cerebral palsy and lives in a Mumbai slum. The students have raised £500 which they are now figuring out how best to spend it to provide the maximum benefit to Hashish.
After the tour it was time to get down to the business of the day which was the blessing and the unveiling of the commemorative plaque.
The Chair of Trustees Bruce Powell gave a short speech in which he said: “Today marks the next great step in the history of Treloar’s. It has taken us five years to develop Vision Treloar’s and today is the formal recognition of this.”
Treloar’s chaplain Mark Birch then blessed the new campus before HRH the Countess of Wessex unveiled the plaque.
The countess said of the occasion: “I would like to congratulate all of you involved with this campaign. I know how hard you have worked and the students are very grateful. It really is a pleasure to perform this duty.”
