Nate Oppel, a grade 8 student in Toronto, Ontario had a unique opportunity that not many 13 year olds get to have. He had the amazing experience of interviewing one of the stars of War Horse, James Retter Duncan.

May 29, 2012 - PRLog -- How did Nate come across such a once in a lifetime opportunity? Through Lisa Phillips, the founder and Camp Director of Horizon Arts Camp, where Nate spends his summers majoring in theatre. Lisa launched a blog called The Artistic Edge, born out of her desire to discuss how experiences in the arts can influence a child’s development of crucial life skills, and ultimately their success in life. Through her work, she has found a gap between what young people know about careers in the arts and reality. Creating encounters between successful arts professionals and aspiring young artists was the perfect way to narrow this gap.

Connecting With My Future is an exciting new interview series featuring discussions between successful musicians, actors, dancers, and artists, and children who are aspiring to achieve the same goals. Kids ask their burning questions and professionals tell their compelling stories about their journey to success. Nate was the lucky one who scored the very first interview!

Lisa explains, “It is my hope that this series will inspire young people who have a passion for the arts to pursue artistic careers and realize, that with hard work and dedication, it is possible.”

War Horse is an international and award winning play that has hit the London, Broadway and now Toronto stage. Based on a children’s book by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse is a family show that crosses all generations. Set during World War I, it is a simple tale about a love story between a boy and his horse. At its heart, are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life. With an all Canadian ensemble cast of 35, this beautifully told story is an exquisite example of theatrical magic at its finest.

Nate saw the show on Sunday May 27, 2012 at the Princess of Wales Theatre and described it as “Epic!”. Afterward he sat down with James for an inspiring interview! Nate’s interview will launch online on Wednesday May 30th on The Artistic Edge. Visit: www.theartisticedge.ca
