May 29, 2012 - PRLog -- It is a matter of great concern that most small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) in India don't have an effective data protection solution. Many organizations do not feel the need to arm their IT department with adequate data protection solutions. SMBs in India pay little heed to the disastrous effect of data lose. There are many available data backup solutions available in the market but American Megatrends India, a company focused on Embedded, Storage and Telematics Solutions, early this year, has launched its Safe Trends 2.0, a Continuous Data Protection (CDP) software suite for SMBs running Windows systems.

Speaking exclusively to EFYTimes.com, Sridharan Mani, director and CEO, American Megatrends India said, basically organizations opt for tape back-up. In desktop environment, the data is copied into removable devices. Several others go for Disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) back up strategy, in which data is initially copied to back-up storage on a disk storage system and then periodically copied again to a tape storage system. Safe Trends 2.0 continually monitors changes in selected files and gives the admin the flexibility to store data on selected locations like local machine, local area network, corporate intranet and Cloud.

The CDP back-up is only done when the CPU utilization is low. Threshold mechanisms monitor the percentage utilization of the CPU and bandwidth throttling is done accordingly during back up. For the first time, the whole file is backed up onto a remote system. Only after that, the delta of the changes from the original is stored, added Mani.

It is worth mentioning here that studies by the University of Texas and the Small Business Administration show that among half of the companies who had lost their data for any reasons ranging from accidental deletion, file damage, virus infection and hardware failure or theft have never reopened and 90 per cent closed within a couple of years.
