HESPERIA, Calif. – In Tania L. Ramos’ new fiction novel Be Still (published by iUniverse), one man is caught between life and death, trying to make peace on both sides, before his life ends and time seals all wounds.

When Jack Silver and his wife, Shannon, lose their 3-day-old daughter, their relationship almost ends. But when Shannon is killed on the anniversary of their daughter’s death, it is Jack’s relationship with his son, Travis, that will suffer most.

An excerpt from Be Still an Editor's Choice and Rising Star award winner:

Before she could walk away, he asked what the tune was that she hummed; it was plaguing him and occupying his mind so thick he felt his head would burst.
“You know this song?” She smiled as if delighted, her stringy auburn and gray hair flowing on a breeze. Her radiant, clear blue eyes grew younger as she gave a coarse, childish giggle and began to answer.
“It’s a silly old song,” Shannon interrupted. “Come, my love. Let this woman be on her way.” She tugged at his arm, and he moved with her, but he was curious why this question vexed her.
He glanced back over a shoulder to the elderly woman for an answer.
Without as much as a peep or a grunt, the woman raised her wrinkled brow and then continued on her way, walking into the darkness of that lonely hilltop, until she was succumbed by the chasm of the night. The light, upbeat tune lingered behind as a delicate echo off the mountains.

Be Still is the poignant tale of a son seeking truth and resolution from an absent father and of a father, trapped between life and death, who must mend relationships and confront his own demons—before time seals all wounds for an eternity.

“I think at some point everybody wonders what happens to a person’s mind and soul when that person is in a coma,” Ramos writes. “Be Still answers this question from a purely speculative opinion, but it also hits on decisions a family member must make in regards to life-support and death.”
