Tablet PC vs. Laptop for College Students

The screen size of a tablet is the most important thing to consider. The larger the screen, the larger the tablet will be.  The wide display can make tablets top heavy when used for reading e-books or browsing the web.

Tablet PCs are for single users only.  Laptops can be used by any number of users.
Entering information with tablet PCs is slower than with a laptop.  Tablets take handwriting inputs.  The touch screen on a tablet is responsive and more natural to use than a mouse.  The tablet boots up quickly.  The keyboard is on-screen, so you have to look down on the screen to type.  Also you have to hold the tablet in one hand and type with the other.

There are more chances of screen damage to tablet PCs than to laptops because a pen device must be used to enter data and a special screen guard for the tablet must be installed when it is purchased. Not to mention that tablet PCs are costlier than laptops.  

Tablet PCs do not have built in optical drives compared to laptops.  You can connect numerous peripherals to laptops if needed.

Laptops can have any operating system, but the operating system on a tablet cannot be changed.  Applications from the App Store/marketplace can only be used with a tablet.

Finally, battery life on a tablet is better than that of a laptop.  Most laptops can operate on battery power for about three hours, and life decreases with applications like games or videos. But the battery on a tablet can operate for up to ten hours on a single charge.  And when it comes to chargers tablet chargers are small and can fit in your pocket or purse.  But a laptop charger is heavier and bulkier.
