Thompson Set for Brainerd Challenge This Weekend

May 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Brett Thompson, driver of the #61 RTTI Chevrolet in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series has seen a lot of different race tracks in his career and the 2.5-mile layout of Brainerd (MN) International Raceway is certainly unique. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series will make its inaugural visit to Brainerd this weekend in the running of the Brainerd "125".

The event will mark the second of four road course races scheduled for the 59-year old series in 2012. Thompson has eleven starts on road courses in the series with a best finish of fourth back in 2009 at Portland (OR) International Raceway. A track not unlike Brainerd.

"Portland and Brainerd are very similar in that they are flat and fast," Thompson said. Thompson spent the week in Brainerd and got familiar with the layout going back to school.

"The track is really narrow at points so the start is going to be tricky," Thompson offered. "Once things get stretched out it should be a pretty good race. Its an old track and the surface is worn so saving tires and staying on track will be key."

Thompson is coming off perhaps the most disappointing event of his career having missed the lineup for the East/West combination event last weekend in Iowa. And while he is only running a partial schedule this season, strong finishes are essential for the team in order to stay up in the owners points.

"The goal this weekend is just run our own race and be in contention at the finish," Thompson said. Just come out of here with a solid finish and then head to Vegas."

In Vegas, Thompson will turn the wheel over to recent high school graduate Braden Havens who will make seven starts for Thompson Motorsports this season. In two starts this season, Havens has finishes of 8th and 13th. Havens is in action this weekend up in Montana in a Super Late Model event.

Also driving for Thompson in NASCAR Whelen All American Series action at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho this season is Hannah Newhouse. Newhouse is coming off her third 3rd place performance of the season last Saturday night. 15-year old Newhouse is the youngest ever NWAAS winner after she claimed the victory in the opening event of the season.  Newhouse will be back in action June 2.

Thompson has started 115 NKNPS races in his career with one win, one Coors Light pole award, 23 top five and 63 top ten performances. His best road course finish is fourth and he has three top ten performance in eleven road course starts.
