May 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Continued interest in U.S. capital markets requires that foreign companies understand U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), at least until the Securities and Exchange Commission adopts International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). European accounting students are eager for a real-world perspective on the major differences and the implementation challenges ahead as the transition from GAAP to IFRS occurs.
Magone & Company Managing Partner Nick Magone provided such a perspective as an invited guest lecturer at the Università di Roma on May 15. Magone, who frequently advises European companies on international tax and accounting issues, presented a one-hour overview to graduate-level financial accounting students and local financial professionals. His presentation examined the current landscape and provided insights on issues ranging from leases and deferred taxes to capital markets.
Magone presented in conjunction with Marco Rossi, Esq. of Marco Q. Rossi & Associati in New York City and Mark V. Santo, Esq. of Keevican Weiss Bauerle & Hirsch, LLC in Pittsburgh. Rossi discussed the cross-border tax aspects of establishing an Italian subsidiary in the U.S., while Santo presented on American capital markets.
Based on worldwide interest in U.S. capital markets, Magone was glad to lend his expertise to his Italian counterparts. “Understanding the differences between IFRS and GAAP will ultimately ease the transition for companies interested in entering the United States,” he says.
