Buffalo Grove Orthodontist Closes the GapBuffalo Grove orthodontist Dr. Yan Razdolsky discusses methods of closing spaces between teeth.
By: Prodentite May 23, 2012 - PRLog -- BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS—Dr. Yan Razdolsky and his staff at Forever Smiles have noticed the gap-toothed smile as a more common feature among models on runways.
From models of yesteryear such as Lauren Hutton to current faces including Ruth Crilly, Lara Stone and Georgia May Jagger, trend-makers appear to be making a push for midline diastema- as it’s known in the orthodontic field- to be a coveted physical trait. “When my wife saw Vanessa Paradis on the cover of a Chanel catalog recently and mentioned the space between her teeth, I decided it was a good time to talk about this type of malocclusion and make sure that patients understand it can be corrected if desired,” said Razdolsky, a Buffalo Grove orthodontist. But he also wanted to be clear of this: a confident man or woman who has a midline diastema and loves their smile need not taken any action toward changing it. “If, on the other hand, midline diastema has you feeling self-conscious and keeps you from showing your teeth when you smile, it should comfort you to know there is a remedy for that,” Razdolsky said. What Causes the Great Divide? Even though the models and actresses mentioned above all display midline diastema, spaces can be present between any of the teeth. They are the result of various causes, including: • Disparity between jaw bone size and teeth size • Missing teeth, due to genetics, decay or trauma • An oversized labial frenum (the tissue that extends from inside the upper lip to the gum, just above the front teeth) • Unhealthy oral habits like finger sucking • Improper swallowing patterns where the tongue pushes against the front teeth when swallowing • Gum disease Treatment Options Razdolsky has treated hundreds of patients with diastema during his career, and braces have proved to be a viable, noninvasive malocclusion correction method. Braces provide the appropriate level of force required to move the teeth together. Patients who have congenitally missing teeth or teeth that were removed because of trauma or decay likely will need a dental implant to fill the void. Implants cannot be placed in the jaws of children because they are still growing. However, the child’s orthodontist can work in connection with the child’s dentist, who can install an appliance known as a Maryland Bridge, which maintains the space until the implant can be placed. In some cases of diastema, surgery is required prior to braces. Gaps caused by a larger-than- Other methods of eliminating the space between teeth fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry and include the use of porcelain crowns or veneers to widen the teeth and fill the gap. We don’t recommend this for children. If you’re an adult and aren’t in a rush, orthodontic methods will eliminate the space without altering the teeth’s structure, Razdolsky said, adding that he doesn’t like to see patients voluntarily reduce healthy tooth structure just for the sake of a quick cosmetic fix when a noninvasive method is available. Some adults inquire about veneers when they are opposed to wearing conventional metal braces, but there are many aesthetic options available, such as ceramic brackets and Invisalign.
