Follow on Google News | Catholic Church Musicians Need Responsorial PsalmsThe new translation of the missal used in the Catholic mass means that churches which use contemporary music must find new melodies. Life Teen bands and youth choirs will benefit most from new melodies for responsorial psalms.
While traditional music remains serviceable with the new translations, all the musical directors who lead contemporary music groups, youth choirs, and Life Teen bands, will be searching for sheet music and recordings which have incorporated the English translations, which debuted in September of 2011. The problem is, the new words of the translation no longer have the same rhythm, nor the same number of syllables, as the previous years' versions, and so the new text no longer fits the old melodies. So songwriters of worship music simultaneously have an opportunity and a challenge in 2012, if their intended performing group sings contemporary music. One company is working on a solution. Victor Rodriguez, a partner of Lead Sheet Take Down Service, a music preparation company based in Southern California, is creating one full liturgical year of responsorial psalms, done in the contemporary style. Rodriguez has submitted his compositions to the necessary approval bodies, namely, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). Rodriguez likewise requested that the Life Teen program include his responsorial psalms in their packet for distribution.
