May 21, 2012 - PRLog -- SKF will send Weston AFC, the winners of North Somerset Under 18s football tournament Meet The World, on an all-expenses paid trip to Gothenburg, Sweden in July to represent their country at the Gothia Cup, otherwise known as the youth football ‘World Cup’.

Meet The World took place on Saturday May 5th at Weston AFC’s Woodspring Stadium and attracted a host of local teams.  Over the course of the one-day tournament, six 7-a-side teams battled it out over a series of 20-minute matches, totalling five hours of football.  The matches were played in a competitive spirit with plenty of talent on show.

The excitement of the day was encapsulated in a pulsating final match between Weston AFC and a local charity, Sports Active Seagulls.  SAS needed to win by three clear goals to take the grand prize but Dan Jackson in the Weston goal was in inspired form to ensure that Weston AFC took the pre-event tournament cup with a 2-1 win.

Weston AFC will now travel as the guests of SKF to the Gothia Cup to represent the UK in the Under 18 group.  With over 1,600 teams from across the globe, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join the party and 'meet the world'.

Ryan Northmore, the Weston AFC Coach said, "This is a wonderful opportunity to put our players onto the world stage.  To compete against players from across the world is fantastic.  The mix of cultures is going to create a unique atmosphere and we cannot wait to be a part of it."  Callum Sully, one of the Weston AFC players, added, “We’re all really buzzing to go to the Gothia cup.  It’s going to be a great tournament with a lot of good teams in there and we’ll get to show our football to pretty much the whole world.”

Last year’s Gothia Cup opening ceremony attracted 51,000 spectators and was broadcast on Swedish television.  Clearly, this is a trip that the coaches and players of Weston AFC will never forget.

SKF, the knowledge engineering company, has been running local Meet The World football tournaments since 2007.  The idea behind this initiative is not only to organise an exciting one-day football contest for a local community but also to give more young people – whatever their culture, gender, religion or skin colour – the chance to travel to Gothenburg, take part in the Gothia Cup and meet other young people from different countries.

SKF is represented in every country where these local Meet The World tournaments take place and is also the main sponsor of the Gothia Cup, the biggest and best-known football tournament for children and youngsters in the world.
