May 21, 2012 - PRLog -- The historical remains of Berkhamsted Castle will once again open its doors, this time to a series of summer events sponsored by The Berkeley Gallery and raising funds for The Hospice of St Francis, The Iain Rennie Hospice and The Pepper Foundation.

Following its involvement in 2011, The Berkeley Gallery is delighted and proud to be spearheading a programme of 5 theatrical performances for 2012 to be held at the Castle, in conjunction with Illyria and Oddsocks theatre companies.  The five events include: The Twits by Roald Dahl, HMS Pinafore by Gilbert & Sullivan and Henry V and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

The programme of events for 2012 is as follows:

Friday 1st June 2012 - The Twits 7.00pm
Saturday 16th June 2012 - Henry V 7.30pm
Saturday 1st September 2012 - HMS Pinafore 7.30pm
Saturday 8th September 2012 - The Twits 7.00pm
Saturday 22nd September 2012 - Julius Caesar 7.30pm

Tickets cost from £10 for children (under 16) and from £18 for adults.  Family tickets are also available for 2 adults and 2 children.   Tickets can be purchased from The Berkeley Gallery, 39 – 43 Lower Kings Road, Berkhamsted and online at www.berkhamstedcastleevents.co.uk.  Doors open at 6.30pm for each event and there will be a maximum number of tickets available per event of 500.  Picnics can be booked and paid for in advance.

Summer 2011 saw the first ‘event’ to be held at Berkhamsted Castle in over 15 years. With the steadfast campaigning of Councillor Peter Mathews and the backing and support of Berkhamsted Town Council, the Illyria theatrical company performed their version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Pirates of Penzance’ to a sellout crowd of over 400.  Feedback from Peter, Berkhamsted Council as a whole, volunteers and ticket holders was resoundingly positive.  With the support English Heritage, Alan Kemp (Town Warden), Paul Chambers (lighting and sound) and the Berkhamsted Castle Visitors Centre, the event was smoothly run.

Funds raised during 2011 were provided to The Berkhamsted Arts Trust. However, in view of the increase in the number of events being organised for 2012, it was proposed that various additional local and deserving charities benefit.

Organiser and owner of The Berkeley Gallery, Paul Rozelaar, said “the intention of the event last year was to set a precedent in showing that events at the Castle can work, and provide enjoyment for many, as well as provide increased exposure for the Castle.  It was met with unanimous support and praise.”  Paul went on to say “through the website we hope to communicate future events at the castle for the benefit of our whole community.”
