The Silent Movie Theatre first opened its doors in February, 1942 when John Hampton opened the theatre with a marquee that said “Old Time Movies” and it became the first and only venue for the preservation of silent films. The theatre had 250 seats with a child’s ticket costing five cents and an adult’s costing 10. Six nights a week for nearly forty years, identical programs ran at 7pm and 9pm. They were accompanied by live music as they were meant to be seen. After World War II, celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith would sit in the back row and watch their own films.
In 1980, Mr. Hampton temporarily closed the theatre and the only light coming through from the theatre would be from his upstairs apartment window. John Hampton passed away in 1990. The theatre reopened on January 18, 1991 with a showing of the King of Kings. Laurence Austin took over the theatre.
Now, patrons can get a whole new experience at this historic venue filled with its share of paranormal activity. The lobby is said to be haunted. A blood spot has been known to appear and disappear in the approximate spot where Austin was gunned down by a hired hit man. He was shot three times in close range including once in the face and a report stated, “his head [was] blown half off – he was showing the inside completely. It was pretty gruesome.” Austin’s boyfriend/projectionist James Van Sickle was heavily in debt and stood to inherit about a million dollars from Austin when he died. So, Van Sickle hired Christian Rodriguez to kill Austin and make it look like a robbery. “He then masqueraded as the grieving lover until the police put it together.”
Mr. Austin’s ghost has also been seen (after hours) loitering in the lobby by employees over the years. The projection booth is said to be haunted by Van Sickle. John Hampton, the original owner, has also been seen, roaming the second floor where he used to live. The affair between Austin and Van Sickle has forever scarred the energy of the theatre.
Citysearch Los Angeles declared the Silent Theatre one of the top ten haunted places in Los Angeles and gave it five out of five stars for its paranormal activity writing about the haunting at the theatre saying, “With one of the most gruesome histories of any movie theatre, the Silent Movie Theatre has forever cemented its status in Haunted Hollywood. Legends include ghosts in the projection rooms, blood-splattered carpet from machine-gun murders and a constant haunting by two former owners.”
