Baker Zimmerman & Perez Advocate National Safe Boating Week

Parkland, FL – The boating and personal water craft accident law firm of Baker, Zimmerman & Perez is proud to advocate National Safe Boating Week (http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/) – May 19-25, 2012. National Safe Boating week is sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council in partnership with the Canadian Safe Boating Council (http://www.csbc.ca/) and promotes safe boating practices and life jacket usage.

Numerous events are planned for the week across the country including a kick-off event – Ready, Set, Wear it! on Saturday, May 19th. Participants will gather to set a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated. The goal is not only to promote the comfortable and versatile options that are available when it comes to life jackets, but also to educate the public about life jackets and safe boating in general.

"Each year, as many as 500 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets," said Virgil Chambers, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council. "New life jackets on the market today make it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water."

Drowning remains the primary cause of death in recreational boating accidents. Statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 88 percent of boaters who drowned in 2010 were NOT wearing their life jackets.

Members of the boating public – including fisherman (anglers), divers, paddlers, canoers, kayakers, water skiers, jet skiers and others who use boats – are encouraged to follow safe boating practices to avoid personal injury accidents and even death.

In addition to wearing your lifejacket / personal flotation device, other boating safety recommendations include but are not limited to: taking a boating safety course, knowing the navigation rules, knowing your boat, being prepared, and not drinking and boating. And of course, remember that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

The National Safe Boating Council’s mission is to be the foremost coalition to advance and promote a safer recreational boating experience through education, outreach and training. Their role is to promote safe and enjoyable boating through education, training and shared resources. It is widely known for its “Wear It” life jacket campaign (http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/) and the annual National Safe Boating Week activities.
