Professor John Fothergill Appointed Pro Vice Chancellor at City University London

PRLog (Press Release) - May 17, 2012 - Professor Fothergill joins City University London from the University of Leicester on 1 August and is both an eminent academic and an experienced academic leader.  He graduated in Electrical Engineering (BSc, MSc, PhD) from Bangor University and joined Standard Telecommunications Laboratory as a Senior Research Engineer.

His subsequent appointment at the University of Leicester saw him move from Lecturer, to Senior Lecturer, to Professor prior to serving as Dean of Science, Pro Vice-Chancellor and currently, Head of Engineering.

Professor Fothergill was PVC at a critical time in the development of the University of Leicester and played a major part in its preparations for the last Research Assessment Exercise, in strengthening levels of student satisfaction and in enhancing Leicester's estate.

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. His election to FIEEE was "for contributions to reliability methodology in the ageing processes of electrical insulation systems".

He chaired the Dielectrics Group of the Institute of Physics until 2010 and he also chairs the International Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Solid Dielectrics. Professor Fothergill was elected to the Fellowship of the Institute of Physics "in recognition for his personal contribution to the advancement of physics as a discipline and a profession."

Professor Fothergill commented on his new appointment - "I'm looking forward to joining City (http://www.city.ac.uk/) . My research has been multidisciplinary (in engineering, physics, mathematics and a bit of chemistry) with applications in high-voltage insulation systems and in bio-engineering. All of my work has been in collaboration with "end users", including businesses, engineering industries and hospitals. So I think I should be a "good fit" to the City environment. The research and enterprise strategy that City has recently published will make it an exciting place to work."
