His subsequent appointment at the University of Leicester saw him move from Lecturer, to Senior Lecturer, to Professor prior to serving as Dean of Science, Pro Vice-Chancellor and currently, Head of Engineering.
Professor Fothergill was PVC at a critical time in the development of the University of Leicester and played a major part in its preparations for the last Research Assessment Exercise, in strengthening levels of student satisfaction and in enhancing Leicester's estate.
He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. His election to FIEEE was "for contributions to reliability methodology in the ageing processes of electrical insulation systems".
He chaired the Dielectrics Group of the Institute of Physics until 2010 and he also chairs the International Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Solid Dielectrics. Professor Fothergill was elected to the Fellowship of the Institute of Physics "in recognition for his personal contribution to the advancement of physics as a discipline and a profession."
