Follow on Google News | Casablanca to hold North Africa’s largest solar power meeting on 22- 23 MayMASEN, the Ministry of Energy, ADEREEE and l’Office National de l’Electricite will welcome Moroccans, North African government officials and the international community to Casablanca
Next week, Morocco will set the stage for North Africa’s largest gathering of solar professionals to date. MASEN, the Ministry of Energy, ADEREEE and l’Office National de l’Electricite will welcome Moroccans, North African government officials and the international community to Casablanca to help further the Maghreb’s plans to become a leading region for solar power development. Official delegations and solar research centres from across North Africa will join forces with international heavy weight companies and investors. From giants of the power sector such as ABB, Alstom, GE & Siemens to leaders in CSP and PV including Abengoa, AREVA Solar, Enel Green Power, First Solar, Juwi Solar, SunEdison, SunPower, Trina & Yingli. Delegates from as far afield as China, Russia, Europe and the Middle East will all assemble in Casablanca. For some in the CSP sector the meeting has added significance as they await the announcement from MASEN of the winning bidder of the first phase of the Ouarzazate project. Whilst details have been kept strictly confidential, last week the approval by the Moroccan government for MASEN to create the new subsidiary, Masen Capital which will participate in the projects represented a further step forward. By integrating with the winning consortia, the participation of Masen Capital enables the projects to access funding from development banks which otherwise would have been off limits to private projects. Since originally whittled down from a list of 18 consortia, the CSP projects in the final stages have undergone extensive technical and financial evaluation to ensure that they are as cost effective as possible for the Moroccan market. With a tender for PV expected in the next round, work is already underway to similarly study the practical characteristics of the PV projects in the region. In Casablanca, First Solar experts will lead a workshop with select governmental, industrial and financial representatives to discuss how such a project could be realised. Central to the discussion and aims of the governments will be how the industry can involve the local community and stimulate economic development. This year with well over half of attendees being from North Africa marks the increasing engagement of local industries and individuals in this rapidly growing sector. Last minute seats are still available at the conference until the end of this week.
