India’s first NCB® Proximal Humerus Plate assisted Surgery performed in Chennai.

PRLog (Press Release) - May 16, 2012 - ‘Proximal Humerus’ is the medical term for the Shoulder and the first ever surgery for treating shoulder fracture using the Zimmer ®-NCB PH poly-axial locking plate in India was performed recently by a team of renowned Orthopedic surgeons in Chennai.
Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr. S. Senthilkumar and Dr. Naresh Padmanabhan of AAORC,Chennai performed this complex surgery on Mr.Sridhar (name changed) aged 64 years who sustained fracture of the Proximal humerus ( Shoulder )  following a road traffic accident who is now steadily recovering after the surgery.

Explaining about the proximal humerus or shoulder fracture Dr. S.Senthilkumar said, “This kind of fracture occurs when the ‘ball-and-socket shoulder joint’ (at the top of the arm bone) is broken. Most shoulder fractures where the fragments are not badly displaced, can heal with a simple sling. But in severely damaged or badly displaced fractures, surgery is necessary. In such surgeries, the fractured pieces are put back together and held in position, by an implant."

Dr. Naresh Padmanabhan elucidating on the details of the surgery said, “The success lies in a good surgical technique and accurate intraoperative reduction supplemented by a implant like the NCB locking plate which provides the flexibility of polyaxial screws along with a stable locking construct.Implant design should be good and stable fixation needs to be achieved as it plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of the surgery. The main advantage of this surgery is the possibility of a early mobilization."
