May 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Grid Earth, (www.gridearth.org) a US-based organization with a mission to bring solar powered lamps to underdeveloped villages that are dependent on harmful kerosene lighting, donated solar powered household lamps to all the residents of Rockstone Pond Village.
Rockstone Pond in Belize is located near one the most visited Mayan ruins in Belize called Altun Ha. Altun Ha was a significant trading center settled around 250 BC with about 10,000 Mayans living in and around this area. The ruins are visited by tourists typically by bus. Unfortunately, all the tourists pass right by the village on their way to the ruins without knowledge of their hardships. The village relies on the sales of handcrafted wares to the tourists to live. The villagers have a strip of stands to help sell their wares right outside the entrance to the ruins.
With limited to no access to electricity, the village relies on harmful kerosene lamps for lighting. Grid Earth donated safe solar powered household lamps to all the residents. Grid Earth took the time to educate the residents on how to properly use the solar panels and where to mount them, as well as how to connect the lamp and properly use it inside their homes.
The kerosene lamps are no comparison to the brightness and the safety of the solar powered lamps. The use of kerosene lamps for lighting results in over 1 million deaths per year to respiratory illness, asphyxia, burns, and suffocation.
Grid Earth, an Austin based US organization, has a simple mission:
To save lives, improve health and educational conditions, and stimulate economies in underdeveloped areas of the world by providing solar-powered household lighting and increased opportunities for commerce.
There is now one more village using clean, sustainable & safe lighting. Grid Earth would like to extend a special thanks to the Belizean Ministry of Rural Development, and to the people of Bomba Village.
