May 15, 2012 - PRLog -- The Oshman Family JCC (OFJCC) in Palo Alto is now offering the Living Strong, Living Well (LSLW) strength and fitness program for cancer patients and survivors run by the Health Improvement Program (HIP) at Stanford University. This is a free program for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease.

“We seized the opportunity to partner with Stanford’s Health Improvement Program on this meaningful program,” said Bonnie McLaughlin, OFJCC Fitness Manager. “As a community center dedicated to the concept of Live Fully™, we want to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Seven OFJCC personal trainers took the LSLW certification course at Stanford, learning how to tailor workouts around the unique limitations caused by cancer treatment. The program teaches participants to use weights, increase muscle mass, work on balance and regain a functional lifestyle.

“It’s so rewarding to see what exercise can do for people who have gone through so much,” said Joyce Hanna, MA, MS, Associate Director of HIP. “I’ve been doing this for over ten years, and I never leave a class without being terribly inspired. I love to see people get better.”

Research shows that physical activity may decrease recurrence and increase survivorship for cancer patients. But according to Hanna, there’s a huge emotional component as well.

“Participants feel more optimistic about their lives,” said Hanna. “They start thinking, ‘Now that I can do this, what else can I do?’”

Living Strong, Living Well is available at no cost to participants. People who take the class at the OFJCC receive greatly discounted membership after finishing the program. The next 12-week class begins in June and is open to all members of the community. Further details can be found at http://www.paloaltojcc.org/lslw.

In addition to partnering with HIP, the OFJCC has an ongoing partnership with Stanford Hospital and Clinics through the Stanford Health Library & Resource Center located on the Taube Koret Campus for Jewish Life.
