MAY 14, 2012 - MALIBU, CA.

After almost 20 years of planning and hearings, what should be considered an environmental victory for the world recognized city of Malibu, CA. is now actually facing protests when bulldozers begin the clean up in the long awaited Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project on June 1.

As a result, a group of veteran surfers who strongly support the project have joined together to fight back against the half-truths and outright lies of those who oppose the project, primarily local real estate agents, professional fundraisers, and some local politicians.

Glenn Hening, founder of Surfrider Foundation, Dogtown legend and Malibu veteran Skip Engblom, surfer and pollution survivor Ken Seino, and two other well known Malibu surfers, Steve Woods and Fred Roberts have lent their names and support to the effort to fight the misinformation distributed about the Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project.

Surfrider founder Hening said, “We fought and won Surfrider’s first victory at Malibu, and this project will help return the lagoon and wetlands to a natural state that was ruined decades ago.”

Hening continues, “In fact, the Coastal Commission voted unanimously in favor of the restoration, which is also supported by dozens of environmental groups and regulatory agencies.”

Skip Engblom, a Malibu surfer for 50 years and the very first member of Surfrider, said, “I can’t understand why surfers would oppose this project. They obviously have a lot to learn.” You can see his interview on therealmalibu411.com

Surfer and Malibu Lagoon pollution survivor Ken Seino strongly supports the project after contracting what he believes to be a virus that destroyed the right ventricle in his heart and which he believes has claimed the lives of at least three other surfers. Ken has spoken publicly about his experience and that of Eric Villanueva, a surfer who died in 1992 of the same disease. Villanueva was 23 years old.

Seino said, “Why would anyone oppose this genuine effort to improve the wetlands’ ability to clean itself?”

The devoted veteran surfers, joined by project experts and The Real Malibu 411 are planning two public information/informal debates in the next two weeks.
