PRLog (Press Release) - May 14, 2012 - Potatoes are part of Flagler County’s roots. For more than a century, the spud was a staple crop in the Western, and remains an important agricultural feature and iconic representation of the county’s agricultural heritage.

Thanks to presenting sponsor Politis & Matovina, the potato will have its day in the sun at the Fourth Annual Potato Festival on Saturday, May 19.  The festivities will take place in and outside around Bunnell City Hall from 9 AM to 4 PM.

According to Michael Barr, chair of the Bunnell Chamber of Commerce, “The Potato Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate Bunnell’s agricultural history and enjoy the city’s hometown hospitality.”

Hosted by the Bunnell Chamber of Commerce, the City of Bunnell and the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, the Potato Festival is guaranteed to be a mashing good time for all. A few reasons to join the chamber this year include a pageant, cooking competition, parade, bounce houses and games in the kids’ area, food and craft vendors, music, cold beer and more.

•   Don’t miss the Potato Pageant to crown local “potato princesses” and “tater tots” from 10 to 11 AM. More than 40 girls (ages 1 to 10) will participate in this fourth annual event. Each girl will leave with smiles, increased confidence and a goody bag.

•   The Second Annual “Bunnell Township Centennial Parade” will kick off at 11:30 AM with marching bands, clubs, businesses, organizations, scouts and teams joining the fun by foot, float, truck, tractor and four wheeler.

•   Political candidates and incumbents will prepare and share their favorite potato dishes during the Political Potato Cook Off, starting at 1 PM. Vote for your favorite with free samples until the food runs out.

•   There will be a kids’ area with inflatables and a lineup of spud-friendly games throughout the day. The mashed potato eating and sculpting contests are two festival favorites with competitors and spectators alike.

•   There’s no reason to leave hungry with your choice of baked potatoes, fresh french fries, homemade potato salad and other delicious offerings sold by local vendors. We even have potatoes to go…. Five-pound bags of fresh, locally grown potatoes will be available for $5 each.

The Fourth Annual Potato Festival offers Flagler County residents and visitors a full day of family friendly fun near the intersection of East Court and South Lemon Streets in downtown Bunnell.  Click here for the complete schedule of activities. Parking and admission is free.
