A poll by the Prince’s Trust and the Times Educational Supplement has found that more teachers are witnessing children “scavenging” from their classmates’ leftovers at lunchtime – while others arrived unwashed and see school as a place where they can get warm.

The survey of 515 secondary school professionals also revealed a 16% increase in malnutrition or inadequate diet among schoolchildren, many of whom were not getting enough to eat.
