American Native is a weekly one hour radio program that focuses on the important matters of Native American life: health, family, culture, relationships, trends, current events, personal finance and more. In addition to highlighting information on issues and current events not commonly discussed each week in the mainstream media, the show also features interviews with a wide range of persons whose efforts influence Native American lives

This week, Saturday, May 26th, 2012, the show interviews Howard M. Shanker, Legal Counsel for Save The Peaks Coalition and previously counsel to 4 other sovereign Native American tribes who sought to protect the sacred San Francisco Peaks from desecration by the Snowbowl ski resort – a private ski area on federal land.

Snowbowl has filed a motion for sanctions against all of the Save the Peaks Coalition Plaintiffs and against Shanker personally. This, in a lawsuit where “Save The Peaks” never sought any monetary damages. Instead seeking only some sort of  accommodation as the Snowbowl business model intends to create man made snow out of dangerous treated sewage (a public health hazard) and place it on ski-runs upon the San Francisco Peaks. “Federal” land that is sacred to 13 of the tribes in the southwestern United States. (A desecration). We look forward to hearing what he has to say.

Howard M. Shanker: A lawyer, has represented environmental organizations, business interests, communities, Native American Tribes, and Native American organizations in complex constitutional, statutory, environmental, and natural resource based counseling and litigation for over 23 years. He previously served a three year term, as an appointee of President Clinton, on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (“NEJAC”), Enforcement Subcommittee, where he worked to create policy to mitigate disparate negative impacts on low income and minority communities. Howard Shanker was honored by the President of the Navajo Nation and the Navajo Nation Council for his legal work in furtherance of protecting the San Francisco Peaks, a site that is sacred to the Tribe. In 2008, Howard Shanker ran for Congress in Arizona Congressional District One. Persons interested in contacting Mr Shanker are directed to his firm's website: http://www.shankerlaw.net/

"As we put together the show we always envision it being listened to by a family just starting their day." Says Kevin Prout Co-Producer. With the exception of an Interview on a serious subject,. "American Native" strives to be an entertaining, informative and inspiring hour. Even so, its important to us that our end product be a show the whole family can enjoy together." In a world of “Shock Jocks” and “Contentious Radio Talk Shows” that apparently is what makes “American Native” unique.
