Koran Dunbar and Spike Lee with Greencastle Poster
- May 10, 2012 - HARRISBURG, Pa. --
Greencastle resident Koran Dunbar received an unexpected request recently by noted filmmaker Spike Lee, who was visiting the Shippensburg area. The renowned filmmaker had heard about Dunbar’s film (aptly titled “Greencastle”)
and requested to view the trailer. After viewing it, his response left an indelible impression on Dunbar.
“When Spike Lee told me that I was on the right track with my film, I knew I had to move forward with it. He told me, ‘This is your first film. You’re on your way!’ I was ecstatic,” says the local filmmaker. Then Lee added a bit of advice for Dunbar: “When you’re going after a dream or a goal, you cannot use logic.”
It’s a concept Dunbar is well acquainted with. A noted comedian who has been seen on nationwide TV (Late Night with Conan O’Brien) as well as known venues around the country, the dramatic piece might come as a surprise to some of his fans. However, “Greencastle”
isn’t merely a drama – it is based on Dunbar’s own experiences as a young African American raised in the predominantly White community of Greencastle, PA. An intimate portrayal that includes the ups and downs of Dunbar’s life, including that of being a single father, the film also introduces Dunbar’s real-life child, Aurelius Dunbar, as his onscreen son.
will be the main topic of Dunbar’s interview with Harrisburg’s own J Blair Brown of the popular internet radio program Livin’ the Dream! with J Blair Brown, which will broadcast live (via phone) on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 7pm EST.
