May 10, 2012 - READING IS FUN WEEK LASTS ALL YEAR FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEER Grand Lodge Resident’s Weekly Visits to Local School Spark Interest in Reading FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 9, 2012
LINCOLN, Neb. - Schools across America will celebrate Reading Is Fun Week May 13-19 with special activities and focus on the joy and benefits of reading. For Rudge Vifquain, every week is Reading is Fun Week. Vifquain, a resident of Grand Lodge at the Preserve, a senior living community in Lincoln, has a standing engagement every Tuesday with second-grade students at nearby Kahoa Elementary School. During Vifquain’s visits, students take turns showing off their reading skills. “The kids have as much fun reading to me as I do being read to,” said Vifquain. “They see me coming and I get big hugs and waves. They like my sense of humor and we have a good time.” “By letting the kids read to him, Rudge is serving several purposes,” said Lisa Henning, Grand Lodge’s executive director. “He’s getting them excited to read, and he’s also socializing and sharing his personality with others. All that is great for his spirit and well-being. Grand Lodge residents love to participate in a variety of activities and lead a balanced and fulfilling life.”
Grand Lodge, one of 12 continuing care retirement communities owned and operated by Des Moines-based Lifespace Communities, Inc., encourages residents to volunteer their time as part of the community’s FitSixSM program to promote overall wellness. FitSix integrates the six dimensions of wellness – intellectual, social, vocational, physical, spiritual and emotional – to sustain and improve quality of life.
